Join us for a luminous evening as we welcome our very first Author in Residence, Margaret Hutton, on March 18th from 6:00–7:30 PM.

Margaret Hutton’s fiction has appeared in The Sun and The South Carolina Review, with essays featured in Memoir Land and The Rumpus. She graduated with honors in creative writing from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and holds an MFA from George Mason University. A native North Carolinian and former environmental reporter, she now divides her time between Washington, DC and her art studio in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Her debut novel, If You Leave, is a sweeping work of historical fiction centered on two women whose decades-long friendship is forged — and tested — during World War II in Washington, DC. Tender and unflinching, the story explores motherhood, love, art, loyalty, and the impossible choices women are often asked to make in extraordinary times. It is a novel about devotion and distance, about what we carry and what we leave behind — and the quiet resilience that defines a life well lived.

The evening will include a live reading from the novel and a short presentation by Margaret, followed by conversation and connection over thoughtfully curated charcuterie, fresh crudité, a sweet surprise from our pastry chef and champagne. Each guest will also receive a copy of Margaret’s book as part of the evening.

At Life’s Patina, we believe that stories, like homes, gather meaning over time. We are honored to begin this new chapter surrounded by beauty, literature, and community — and we hope you’ll join us for a gathering that feels as intimate and enduring as the pages themselves.
